Clarice Season 1 Episode 7 (Subtitles Preview)
1
00:00:08,791 --> 00:00:10,247
Previously on "Clarice"...

2
00:00:10,271 --> 00:00:12,597
Two dead women floated
down the Anacostia River.

3
00:00:12,621 --> 00:00:14,294
Those women were whistle blowers,

4
00:00:14,318 --> 00:00:15,861
and they died
trying to tell a story.

5
00:00:15,885 --> 00:00:17,950
So how come the autopsy
says natural causes?

6
00:00:17,974 --> 00:00:19,560
I didn't have anything
to do with that.

7
00:00:19,584 --> 00:00:21,519
Someone else got to the
coroner. Someone with power.

8
00:00:21,543 --> 00:00:22,999
Have you heard about
the Black Coalition?

9
00:00:23,023 --> 00:00:24,739
I respect deeply what
the Coalition is doing,

10
00:00:24,763 --> 00:00:26,393
but it's not for me.

11
00:00:26,417 --> 00:00:27,742
You really screwed it, Marilyn.

12
00:00:27,766 --> 00:00:30,093
No, you said no
one would get to me.

13
00:00:30,117 --> 00:00:31,703
What does Starling know?

14
00:00:31,727 --> 00:00:33,618
She says they found
evidence in my house.

15
00:00:33,642 --> 00:00:35,011
This is all because
they connected

16
00:00:35,035 --> 00:00:36,621
the women you dumped to me.

17
00:00:36,645 --> 00:00:38,405
You said she gave you
something I would need.

18
00:00:38,429 --> 00:00:40,103
Get me whatever the FBI knows.

19
00:00:40,127 --> 00:00:41,539
And I'll get you both out.

20
00:00:41,563 --> 00:00:43,584
There was a man.
Can't remember his face.

21
00:00:43,608 --> 00:00:44,672
I'll find him.

22
00:00:44,696 --> 00:00:45,847
I'd like to retain you.

23
00:00:45,871 --> 00:00:48,048
Thank you for the trust.

24
00:01:14,161 --> 00:01:16,356
Nearly 10 months
after going missing,

25
00:01:16,380 --> 00:01:18,271
the body of
14-year-old Cody Phelps

26
00:01:18,295 --> 00:01:19,751
was found in a suburban home

27
00:01:19,775 --> 00:01:21,796
in Alexandria,
Virginia, this morning.

28
00:01:21,820 --> 00:01:24,582
Alright, the only people
permitted in this room

29
00:01:24,606 --> 00:01:27,367
are the people actively
working the Phelps case.

30
00:01:27,391 --> 00:01:28,716
Yes? Yes, sir.

31
00:01:28,740 --> 00:01:30,544
Yes. Yes, sir.

32
00:01:30,568 --> 00:01:33,156
I want a time line for the
day Cody went missing.

33
00:01:33,180 --> 00:01:36,289
Tell the Rapid Start supervisor
to get his ass down here.

34
00:01:36,313 --> 00:01:38,639
Tell him I want any
particulars on my desk

35
00:01:38,663 --> 00:01:40,511
the second they
become available.

36
00:01:40,535 --> 00:01:41,773
Call the crime lab.

37
00:01:41,797 --> 00:01:43,253
Tell them we need
a rush turnaround

38
00:01:43,277 --> 00:01:45,279
on any DNA pulled
from the scene.

39
00:01:46,193 --> 00:01:47,300
Let's get AV set up.

40
00:01:47,324 --> 00:01:48,910
Every news outlet
is all over this.

41
00:01:48,934 --> 00:01:51,087
We've got to be up to
speed on what's out there.

42
00:01:51,111 --> 00:01:52,982
Let's stay on our toes, people.

43
00:01:54,853 --> 00:01:56,788
Reporter #The country
held its breath for Cody

44
00:01:56,812 --> 00:01:58,268
when he was abducted
last year, just months after...

45
00:01:58,292 --> 00:01:59,704
Has anyone seen Starling?

46
00:01:59,728 --> 00:02:01,097
ViCAP's new motto.

47
00:02:01,121 --> 00:02:02,402
We should have new jackets made.

48
00:02:02,426 --> 00:02:04,143
We should be in
Alexandria by now.

49
00:02:04,167 --> 00:02:05,710
- This family's waiting.
- Yeah, I know.

50
00:02:05,734 --> 00:02:07,146
Let's, stash this stuff

51
00:02:07,170 --> 00:02:09,148
before we get the eyes
of the nation on us, okay?

52
00:02:09,172 --> 00:02:11,716
Cody was the man of the house
for his single mom and sister

53
00:02:11,740 --> 00:02:13,718
when his abduction
rocked the nation.

54
00:02:13,742 --> 00:02:16,547
Now the search ends
with a new question,

55
00:02:16,571 --> 00:02:17,809
"Who did this to him?"

56
00:02:17,833 --> 00:02:19,593
Where is Starling?

57
00:02:19,617 --> 00:02:21,552
Still on leave. It's
only been a week.

58
00:02:21,576 --> 00:02:23,336
AG signed off on
her early return.

59
00:02:23,360 --> 00:02:25,033
She wants her out front on this.

60
00:02:25,057 --> 00:02:26,905
- Very high profile.
- For a 7 -C?

61
00:02:26,929 --> 00:02:28,863
Cody Phelps was
abducted a year ago.

62
00:02:28,887 --> 00:02:31,301
There's no active killer.
It's basically a cold case.

63
00:02:31,325 --> 00:02:34,023
Also, he's a kid who died.

64
00:02:35,285 --> 00:02:37,263
Do we think she's
okay? Starling?

65
00:02:37,287 --> 00:02:39,222
After Felker? A week seems soon.

66
00:02:39,246 --> 00:02:41,006
Also, define "okay."

67
00:02:41,030 --> 00:02:44,227
You know, Starling is good,
but has she ever been okay?

68
00:02:44,251 --> 00:02:47,036
Are you okay, Agent Clarke?

69
00:02:48,385 --> 00:02:49,406
Sorry, sir.

70
00:02:49,430 --> 00:02:50,929
- I was out for a run.
- Right.

71
00:02:50,953 --> 00:02:54,062
Well, listen,
whatever the AG says.

72
00:02:54,086 --> 00:02:56,195
I feel like you come
back when you're ready.

73
00:02:56,219 --> 00:02:58,241
Well, my people pulled
coal out of the ground

74
00:02:58,265 --> 00:03:00,068
in West Virginia for
the last 100 years.

75
00:03:00,092 --> 00:03:02,007
When we say we're
okay, we're okay.

76
00:03:04,140 --> 00:03:06,118
Have you found a new therapist?

77
00:03:06,142 --> 00:03:08,294
- Still working on that.
- It's not optional.

78
00:03:08,318 --> 00:03:10,253
Understood. Sir,
when there's time,

79
00:03:10,277 --> 00:03:12,994
I'd appreciate hearing where
we're at on the River Murders.

80
00:03:13,018 --> 00:03:14,518
Boss.

81
00:03:14,542 --> 00:03:16,128
I told Alexandria PD to keep
their hands off the scene,

82
00:03:16,152 --> 00:03:17,434
but the longer we wait... Right.

83
00:03:17,458 --> 00:03:18,676
Let's go.

84
00:03:21,940 --> 00:03:23,701
Starling.

85
00:03:23,725 --> 00:03:24,987
It's him.

86
00:03:30,732 --> 00:03:32,100
It's him.

87
00:03:32,124 --> 00:03:33,363
It's the guy, the guy
from Woodhaven

88
00:03:33,387 --> 00:03:34,625
with Marilyn Felker,
the one who...

89
00:03:34,649 --> 00:03:35,974
No, no, no, no.

90
00:03:35,998 --> 00:03:37,367
That... That's
not... I-It is. It is.

91
00:03:37,391 --> 00:03:39,020
It's him. I know.

92
00:03:39,044 --> 00:03:40,761
I have been seeing his
face in my head for a week.

93
00:03:40,785 --> 00:03:42,918
I've been trying to
figure out how to...

94
00:03:45,312 --> 00:03:46,791
So you found him.

95
00:03:59,369 --> 00:04:00,912
Can I ask how you know this guy?

96
00:04:00,936 --> 00:04:02,305
Joe Hudlin.

97
00:04:02,329 --> 00:04:03,610
I have a meeting with him today.

98
00:04:03,634 --> 00:04:04,872
This is background.

99
00:04:04,896 --> 00:04:06,178
What kind of meeting, boss?

100
00:04:06,202 --> 00:04:07,440
He's an attorney, alright?

101
00:04:07,464 --> 00:04:08,963
His firm is handling my divorce.

102
00:04:08,987 --> 00:04:10,946
He's not a...

103
00:04:12,556 --> 00:04:13,968
He's not.

104
00:04:13,992 --> 00:04:16,319
Clarice says he is.

105
00:04:16,343 --> 00:04:18,562
Look, she says this
guy put hands on her.

106
00:04:20,738 --> 00:04:23,761
Alright.

107
00:04:23,785 --> 00:04:26,546
Then I need you to
run Cody Phelps for me.

108
00:04:26,570 --> 00:04:29,157
You alright to do that? Yes.

109
00:04:29,181 --> 00:04:31,421
I'm fine. Of
course. Yes. Alright.

110
00:04:31,445 --> 00:04:33,118
You and Esquivel take
Starling to the scene.

111
00:04:33,142 --> 00:04:34,772
Tripathi, you and
I will stay behind.

112
00:04:34,796 --> 00:04:36,817
I'll keep my meeting
with Joe Hudlin.

113
00:04:36,841 --> 00:04:38,166
You can jump on his tail then.

114
00:04:38,190 --> 00:04:39,690
Try to get some
DNA at the meeting.

115
00:04:39,714 --> 00:04:41,387
We can compare
it to what Mapp got

116
00:04:41,411 --> 00:04:42,649
from Clarice's fingernails.

117
00:04:42,673 --> 00:04:44,545
Who am I? James Bond?

118
00:04:50,159 --> 00:04:51,571
It's weird, though,

119
00:04:51,595 --> 00:04:53,155
Hey, where... How
do you know this guy?

120
00:04:54,468 --> 00:04:58,515
Murray, there's a
dead kid in Alexandria.

121
00:05:02,214 --> 00:05:03,868
Yeah.

122
00:05:48,348 --> 00:05:51,109
The homeowners
were doing renovations.

123
00:05:51,133 --> 00:05:52,980
We're guessing that
once air got into the wall,

124
00:05:53,004 --> 00:05:55,722
the flies got in.

125
00:05:55,746 --> 00:05:57,681
An exterminator came,

126
00:05:57,705 --> 00:05:59,813
figured something
crawled inside the wall, died,

127
00:05:59,837 --> 00:06:01,249
an animal of some kind.

128
00:06:01,273 --> 00:06:03,493
So they broke in, and

129
00:06:05,452 --> 00:06:07,410
well, here he is.

130
00:06:13,460 --> 00:06:16,003
9, 10 months decayed.

131
00:06:16,027 --> 00:06:19,050
Killed right after he was taken.

132
00:06:19,074 --> 00:06:20,858
And stashed in a wall.

133
00:06:23,121 --> 00:06:24,471
Or tucked away.

134
00:06:25,994 --> 00:06:29,582
For protection.

135
00:06:29,606 --> 00:06:30,888
I don't know.

136
00:06:30,912 --> 00:06:33,586
Looks like a womb.

137
00:06:33,610 --> 00:06:35,830
Looks like someone
tried to protect him.

138
00:06:41,096 --> 00:06:43,838
If he'd been protected, he
wouldn't be here right now.

139
00:06:47,232 --> 00:06:50,081
Postpone. Why?

140
00:06:50,105 --> 00:06:54,041
The Coalition meeting doesn't
have to be tomorrow night.

141
00:06:54,065 --> 00:06:55,913
We need more
people.11 people is a lot.

142
00:06:55,937 --> 00:06:58,132
Against the whole bureau?

143
00:06:58,156 --> 00:06:59,438
It could be 12.

144
00:06:59,462 --> 00:07:00,918
I still want you to join.

145
00:07:00,942 --> 00:07:02,683
Close the door.

146
00:07:05,294 --> 00:07:08,665
Get 11 scared people who
already feel invisible in a room,

147
00:07:08,689 --> 00:07:09,927
show them they're not alone,

148
00:07:09,951 --> 00:07:11,953
and 11 is essentially everyone.

149
00:07:13,650 --> 00:07:15,846
Watch.

150
00:07:15,870 --> 00:07:18,283
I'll come to the meeting
to support you-all, but

151
00:07:18,307 --> 00:07:19,502
I'll take it.

152
00:07:19,526 --> 00:07:21,678
Mapp. Hey.

153
00:07:21,702 --> 00:07:24,637
Hey, we're sending a DNA
sample from Cody Phelps to the lab.

154
00:07:24,661 --> 00:07:25,943
Can you run it
through your database,

155
00:07:25,967 --> 00:07:27,205
see if there's a match?

156
00:07:27,229 --> 00:07:29,599
Cody Phelps. Send me your stuff.

157
00:07:29,623 --> 00:07:31,363
Okay.

158
00:07:41,286 --> 00:07:43,264
Single blow to the
back of the head.

159
00:07:43,288 --> 00:07:45,571
He died instantly.

160
00:07:45,595 --> 00:07:46,126
Sorry, ma'am.

161
00:07:46,150 --> 00:07:47,965
It's an active crime
scene. He's my little boy.

162
00:07:47,989 --> 00:07:50,141
No. No. Ma'am, if I
could just have you wait.

163
00:07:50,165 --> 00:07:51,664
- I have waited.
- Please wait.

164
00:07:51,688 --> 00:07:53,144
Don't... You need
to let me see him.

165
00:07:53,168 --> 00:07:54,972
I know... you have to see him.

166
00:07:54,996 --> 00:07:56,756
But before you do,
I need you to know

167
00:07:56,780 --> 00:07:59,933
that Cody didn't feel any pain.

168
00:07:59,957 --> 00:08:02,612
It's not much
comfort, but he didn't.

169
00:08:15,538 --> 00:08:19,107
My boy!

170
00:08:26,767 --> 00:08:31,032
My beautiful boy!

171
00:08:37,342 --> 00:08:39,407
Give the prior
owners of the house

172
00:08:39,431 --> 00:08:41,758
to the Rapid Start guys.
You... You have them

173
00:08:41,782 --> 00:08:44,369
- I think homicide has those.
- -Well, then get them, dumb-ass.

174
00:08:44,393 --> 00:08:46,153
This isn't siesta time.

175
00:08:46,177 --> 00:08:47,764
Is he worse than usual?

176
00:08:47,788 --> 00:08:50,418
Clarice.

177
00:08:50,442 --> 00:08:52,725
My database was a bust.

178
00:08:52,749 --> 00:08:55,075
Krendler has a picture
of the guy on his desk,

179
00:08:55,099 --> 00:08:56,337
the guy from Woodhaven.

180
00:08:56,361 --> 00:08:58,644
What? He found him? No.

181
00:08:58,668 --> 00:09:00,080
Krendler knows him
somehow or something.

182
00:09:00,104 --> 00:09:01,429
He doesn't believe it.

183
00:09:01,453 --> 00:09:03,281
He doesn't believe
it's the same guy?

184
00:09:08,635 --> 00:09:10,961
Let's talk when we can. Okay.

185
00:09:10,985 --> 00:09:12,745
Listen, the lab's
doing a feasibility study

186
00:09:12,769 --> 00:09:15,966
on mitochondrial DNA...
Maternally passed chromosomes.

187
00:09:15,990 --> 00:09:18,359
So I checked their cold
cases, and there it was.

188
00:09:18,383 --> 00:09:19,926
What? A match.

189
00:09:19,950 --> 00:09:22,146
We got a match...
a different victim,

190
00:09:22,170 --> 00:09:24,714
a boy in Northwest
D.C. 12 years ago.

191
00:09:24,738 --> 00:09:27,368
Traces of the same DNA
you found on Cody Phelps.

192
00:09:27,392 --> 00:09:29,675
Clarice, some monster...

193
00:09:29,699 --> 00:09:32,223
Some monster
killed two little kids.

194
00:10:01,122 --> 00:10:02,099
Mitochondrial DNA found
at the Cody Phelps scene

195
00:10:02,123 --> 00:10:03,448
is a match to DNA

196
00:10:03,472 --> 00:10:05,058
found on a murder
victim from 12 years ago

197
00:10:05,082 --> 00:10:08,366
Bobby Larkin, abducted
in Northwest D.C. in 1982,

198
00:10:08,390 --> 00:10:10,107
found two days
later hidden in a wall

199
00:10:10,131 --> 00:10:11,674
in the basement of
an abandoned house.

200
00:10:11,698 --> 00:10:13,197
Mitochondrial DNA?

201
00:10:13,221 --> 00:10:15,155
It's a type of DNA
that yields better results

202
00:10:15,179 --> 00:10:16,940
if a sample is old or degraded.

203
00:10:16,964 --> 00:10:18,681
But it's not just the DNA.

204
00:10:18,705 --> 00:10:20,770
Both victims were
14-year-old boys,

205
00:10:20,794 --> 00:10:22,946
both died of hammer
blows to the occipital bone,

206
00:10:22,970 --> 00:10:24,512
and not a regular hammer.

207
00:10:24,536 --> 00:10:25,905
It hasa triangle-shaped head.

208
00:10:25,929 --> 00:10:30,518
It is the same wound,
the same, entombment.

209
00:10:30,542 --> 00:10:32,695
We'll look into it.

210
00:10:32,719 --> 00:10:33,981
Thanks, Mapp.

211
00:10:37,375 --> 00:10:39,527
Sir?

212
00:10:39,551 --> 00:10:41,007
I want to be on this.

213
00:10:41,031 --> 00:10:44,489
Mapp, I know you found it,
but Cody Phelps is ViCAP.

214
00:10:44,513 --> 00:10:46,360
I do not need another
turf war with your boss.

215
00:10:46,384 --> 00:10:48,536
It's not about turf. I
grew up in Northwest.

216
00:10:48,560 --> 00:10:51,365
I know the neighborhood
and the people.

217
00:10:51,389 --> 00:10:53,933
- I don't know.
- Connections are sketchy.

218
00:10:53,957 --> 00:10:55,413
They're 12 years apart.

219
00:10:55,437 --> 00:10:57,415
The kids are two different races.

220
00:10:57,439 --> 00:10:59,504
Hey, I have something here.

221
00:10:59,528 --> 00:11:02,072
The house where Cody was
found had no previous owner,

222
00:11:02,096 --> 00:11:03,334
not when he was hidden there.

223
00:11:03,358 --> 00:11:04,944
It was a foreclosure.

224
00:11:04,968 --> 00:11:07,033
It had been sitting around
empty when Cody disappeared.

225
00:11:07,057 --> 00:11:08,426
An abandoned house,

226
00:11:08,450 --> 00:11:10,994
just like the victim
in Northwest D.C.,

227
00:11:11,018 --> 00:11:13,213
if you need another connection.

228
00:11:13,237 --> 00:11:17,372
See, it's not all
in her head... sir.

229
00:11:28,600 --> 00:11:30,796
Are we worried that
Krendler'sin bed with this guy?

230
00:11:30,820 --> 00:11:32,711
Right now, the only
thing I know for sure

231
00:11:32,735 --> 00:11:34,060
is that the guy on his desk

232
00:11:34,084 --> 00:11:36,410
is our only lead in
the River Murders.

233
00:11:36,434 --> 00:11:39,370
I know what I saw, but I
can't make anyone else see it.

234
00:11:39,394 --> 00:11:40,806
It's hard.

235
00:11:40,830 --> 00:11:42,199
My God. I'm sorry.

236
00:11:42,223 --> 00:11:44,462
It's your first field case.

237
00:11:44,486 --> 00:11:46,856
Okay, I got BSU searching
for anything with a hammer.

238
00:11:46,880 --> 00:11:48,771
I want to start with Bobby
Larkin's mother, Fran,

239
00:11:48,795 --> 00:11:50,622
and the house
where Bobby’s body was found.

240
00:11:54,061 --> 00:11:55,603
Okay.

241
00:11:55,627 --> 00:11:57,605
Was it a nightmare?

242
00:11:57,629 --> 00:11:59,999
Seeing Cody?

243
00:12:00,023 --> 00:12:02,480
No.

244
00:12:02,504 --> 00:12:04,593
Seeing the mother
is the nightmare.

245
00:12:07,030 --> 00:12:08,616
Paul.

246
00:12:08,640 --> 00:12:13,012
I think my most
important question for you is,

247
00:12:13,036 --> 00:12:15,188
who do you want to be?

248
00:12:15,212 --> 00:12:17,364
- Excuse me?
- In this divorce.

249
00:12:17,388 --> 00:12:18,626
Whomever you thought you were

250
00:12:18,650 --> 00:12:22,326
is about to meet a new guy.

251
00:12:22,350 --> 00:12:23,588
What's the new guy like?

252
00:12:23,612 --> 00:12:24,850
In my experience?

253
00:12:24,874 --> 00:12:28,419
Heartbroken, angry.

254
00:12:28,443 --> 00:12:30,943
Angry at their own
helplessness, really.

255
00:12:32,273 --> 00:12:34,730
And some have a
hard time opening up.

256
00:12:34,754 --> 00:12:36,122
I'll start.

257
00:12:36,146 --> 00:12:38,211
You believe your
children should be with you

258
00:12:38,235 --> 00:12:40,344
because of questions
around Mandy’s sobriety.

259
00:12:40,368 --> 00:12:43,434
Our investigator thinks we’re
in pretty good shape,

260
00:12:43,458 --> 00:12:45,001
based on what he's dug up.

261
00:12:45,025 --> 00:12:46,263
Dug up?

262
00:12:46,287 --> 00:12:49,440
Well, you know, Mandy's lobbied

263
00:12:49,464 --> 00:12:51,224
or consulted for half of D.C.,

264
00:12:51,248 --> 00:12:53,923
so there's, stuff.

265
00:12:53,947 --> 00:12:56,186
Excessive drinking at
Christmas parties,

266
00:12:56,210 --> 00:12:57,622
missed meetings at Brookings.

267
00:12:57,646 --> 00:13:01,060
The DUI is, I'm sorry, helpful.

268
00:13:01,084 --> 00:13:03,193
Not for my family, it wasn't.

269
00:13:03,217 --> 00:13:04,455
And it was years ago.

270
00:13:04,479 --> 00:13:06,196
Again, who do you want to be?

271
00:13:06,220 --> 00:13:10,093
The nice guy or the guy who
looked out for his kids?

272
00:13:12,530 --> 00:13:15,771
Was there infidelity?
On either side?

273
00:13:15,795 --> 00:13:17,013
No.

274
00:13:19,494 --> 00:13:23,561
Not that I'm aware of, but

275
00:13:23,585 --> 00:13:25,258
I'd say no.

276
00:13:25,282 --> 00:13:29,045
We have testimony
regarding at least two parties

277
00:13:29,069 --> 00:13:33,179
at Mandy's old firm where
she had passed out.

278
00:13:33,203 --> 00:13:36,313
We've secured a
witness who will testify

279
00:13:36,337 --> 00:13:37,836
that he and Mandy

280
00:13:37,860 --> 00:13:40,447
had a physical
relationship during those periods.

281
00:13:40,471 --> 00:13:43,886
His testimony will be that
Mandy was so out of it,

282
00:13:43,910 --> 00:13:46,236
she didn't remember
him the next... Stop.

283
00:13:46,260 --> 00:13:47,715
You're not gonna sandbag her.

284
00:13:47,739 --> 00:13:50,283
Okay.

285
00:13:50,307 --> 00:13:51,569
That's fine.

286
00:13:54,268 --> 00:13:57,271
You know, Joe, I'm not sure I.

287
00:13:58,925 --> 00:14:01,077
I need to think about this.

288
00:14:01,101 --> 00:14:02,818
Well, like I said,

289
00:14:02,842 --> 00:14:05,279
it's about who you want to be.

290
00:14:41,837 --> 00:14:43,249
Hello, sir. I'm Special
Agent Starling.

291
00:14:43,273 --> 00:14:44,381
This is Special Agent Mapp.

292
00:14:44,405 --> 00:14:46,035
We... What do you want?

293
00:14:46,059 --> 00:14:47,601
We're looking for Fran Larkin.

294
00:14:47,625 --> 00:14:49,342
She's not here. At a friend's.

295
00:14:49,366 --> 00:14:50,866
Do you have that number?

296
00:14:50,890 --> 00:14:52,171
No. No, sir.

297
00:14:52,195 --> 00:14:53,781
That's not gonna do.

298
00:14:53,805 --> 00:14:55,000
I hear you, but we need
to speak to Ms. Larkin,

299
00:14:55,024 --> 00:14:56,523
so how about you
take us to her now?

300
00:14:56,547 --> 00:14:59,700
How about that?

301
00:14:59,724 --> 00:15:01,659
Alright.

302
00:15:01,683 --> 00:15:04,531
She's next door
at the neighbors.

303
00:15:04,555 --> 00:15:06,533
Sorry to barge in on you folks.

304
00:15:06,557 --> 00:15:08,535
Thank you for taking
the time, Mrs. Larkin.

305
00:15:08,559 --> 00:15:10,059
I grew up right near here.

306
00:15:10,083 --> 00:15:11,930
That Ethiopian
place on U Street...

307
00:15:11,954 --> 00:15:13,323
That's my Grandma's.

308
00:15:13,347 --> 00:15:17,022
Really? Well, look at you now.

309
00:15:17,046 --> 00:15:18,676
You say there's new evidence?

310
00:15:18,700 --> 00:15:20,721
About Bobby. That's
right, Mr. Larkin.

311
00:15:20,745 --> 00:15:22,985
Um, Terrence isn't my husband.

312
00:15:23,009 --> 00:15:24,943
He's my brother.

313
00:15:24,967 --> 00:15:26,902
I've been living with Terrence

314
00:15:26,926 --> 00:15:30,253
ever since... that year.

315
00:15:30,277 --> 00:15:34,170
Fran lost her husband
shortly before Bobby died.

316
00:15:34,194 --> 00:15:36,476
Forklift flipped on the job.

317
00:15:36,500 --> 00:15:38,783
Bobby and I were
just getting it together,

318
00:15:38,807 --> 00:15:40,809
the two of us, and then...

319
00:15:44,421 --> 00:15:45,945
Thank you.

320
00:15:48,164 --> 00:15:51,752
You knew Bobby,
too, Mrs... Kern.

321
00:15:51,776 --> 00:15:53,406
Marybeth Kern.

322
00:15:53,430 --> 00:15:55,974
We've been neighbors for years.

323
00:15:55,998 --> 00:15:58,585
What about you,
Mr... No, I never did.

324
00:15:58,609 --> 00:16:00,152
I taught at the high school.

325
00:16:00,176 --> 00:16:03,329
I actually used to
drive him some days.

326
00:16:03,353 --> 00:16:07,116
Marybeth has been
a good friend to me.

327
00:16:07,140 --> 00:16:10,336
I lost my first
husband when my son

328
00:16:10,360 --> 00:16:11,947
was around the
same age as Bobby,

329
00:16:11,971 --> 00:16:16,821
and I just knew how
horribly alone she felt.

330
00:16:16,845 --> 00:16:18,170
Babe, will you get her a tissue?

331
00:16:18,194 --> 00:16:20,433
Yeah, I-I'll get one.

332
00:16:20,457 --> 00:16:22,044
Why are you interested now?

333
00:16:22,068 --> 00:16:24,394
All the police ever said
was Bobby was in that house

334
00:16:24,418 --> 00:16:27,005
selling drugs or... or
buying drugs or something.

335
00:16:27,029 --> 00:16:29,051
But he wasn't like that.

336
00:16:29,075 --> 00:16:31,618
He was driven and kind.

337
00:16:31,642 --> 00:16:33,011
And smart.

338
00:16:33,035 --> 00:16:35,318
It just... It never made sense.

339
00:16:35,342 --> 00:16:36,623
Here you go.

340
00:16:36,647 --> 00:16:38,451
Cops probably killed
Bobby themselves.

341
00:16:38,475 --> 00:16:41,019
They're always busting
kids' heads over nothing.

342
00:16:41,043 --> 00:16:43,021
Probably they did it
and stashed him there.

343
00:16:43,045 --> 00:16:46,024
Sir, there's new DNA evidence
that can help us find out

344
00:16:46,048 --> 00:16:47,634
who did this to your family.

345
00:16:47,658 --> 00:16:50,420
So we're asking for DNA
samples from each of you.

346
00:16:50,444 --> 00:16:52,465
No, ma'am.

347
00:16:52,489 --> 00:16:54,424
These are elimination samples.

348
00:16:54,448 --> 00:16:56,469
Hell no. I'm not
giving you nothing.

349
00:16:56,493 --> 00:16:59,235
Terrence, you will.

350
00:17:01,846 --> 00:17:03,215
Of course.

351
00:17:03,239 --> 00:17:05,415
Me too, if it will help.

352
00:17:07,461 --> 00:17:09,178
Thank you.

353
00:17:09,202 --> 00:17:12,485
Thank you for giving one damn.

354
00:17:12,509 --> 00:17:17,403
Thank you for giving
one damn about my child.

355
00:17:17,427 --> 00:17:19,212
You're the only one.

356
00:17:21,083 --> 00:17:23,651
Ma'am, I promise
I won't be the last.

357
00:17:38,579 --> 00:17:41,123
- So, what's he doing?
- I don't know.

358
00:17:41,147 --> 00:17:44,561
He's been in his office all
day, so I guess lawyer stuff.

359
00:17:44,585 --> 00:17:45,823
So why are you calling me?

360
00:17:45,847 --> 00:17:47,433
Because it's weird, right?

361
00:17:47,457 --> 00:17:49,870
The picture on the boss'
desk, how hard he pushed back.

362
00:17:49,894 --> 00:17:51,655
Who are you investigating?

363
00:17:51,679 --> 00:17:53,178
Look, you know
him better than I do.

364
00:17:53,202 --> 00:17:55,180
- Apparently.
- Don't do that, Murray.

365
00:17:55,204 --> 00:17:57,400
Don't blind-eye this thing.

366
00:17:57,424 --> 00:17:59,054
Look, I want him
to be straight, too,

367
00:17:59,078 --> 00:18:00,490
but you can't sit
there and tell me

368
00:18:00,514 --> 00:18:02,753
that, empirically,
this walks like a duck.

369
00:18:02,777 --> 00:18:05,408
It's his lawyer. He
wants his family back.

370
00:18:05,432 --> 00:18:07,825
Don't tell me
you don't get that.

371
00:18:10,698 --> 00:18:12,154
I'm sorry.

372
00:18:12,178 --> 00:18:14,397
That was...

373
00:18:16,225 --> 00:18:18,769
It's a missing kid, you know

374
00:18:18,793 --> 00:18:21,187
I get it. I'll see
you back there.

375
00:18:30,979 --> 00:18:33,044
And you're sure the
results will come tomorrow?

376
00:18:33,068 --> 00:18:36,439
Okay. Thanks.

377
00:18:36,463 --> 00:18:38,832
That was the lab
confirming they got

378
00:18:38,856 --> 00:18:42,445
the DNA-elimination
swabs for Bobby's mom,

379
00:18:42,469 --> 00:18:46,579
her friend, Marybeth
Kern, and Uncle Terrence.

380
00:18:46,603 --> 00:18:48,538
I keep looking at all this stuff

381
00:18:48,562 --> 00:18:51,149
expecting something
new to magically appear.

382
00:18:51,173 --> 00:18:54,239
It will. It's there.

383
00:18:54,263 --> 00:18:57,547
Okay, they were killed
by a blow from a hammer,

384
00:18:57,571 --> 00:18:58,896
so we're looking for a male.

385
00:18:58,920 --> 00:19:01,551
Sexist. It's the mess.

386
00:19:01,575 --> 00:19:03,205
Female killers are
typically more tidy.

387
00:19:03,229 --> 00:19:05,468
They plan the clean-up
with the killing, right?

388
00:19:05,492 --> 00:19:06,860
Right.

389
00:19:06,884 --> 00:19:10,777
Also, the way the
victims were carried...

390
00:19:10,801 --> 00:19:14,085
In the fetal position,
like a... like a parent.

391
00:19:14,109 --> 00:19:15,304
A father.

392
00:19:15,328 --> 00:19:17,567
A father figure, an uncle.

393
00:19:17,591 --> 00:19:19,221
That Terrence
was a ball of rage.

394
00:19:19,245 --> 00:19:20,700
He sure didn't want
to give up his DNA.

395
00:19:20,724 --> 00:19:23,094
Yeah, why would he?

396
00:19:23,118 --> 00:19:25,033
He thinks the police
killed his nephew.

397
00:19:27,383 --> 00:19:28,621
What do you think?

398
00:19:28,645 --> 00:19:30,754
I'll tell you what I know.

399
00:19:30,778 --> 00:19:32,408
There's a candlelight
vigil for a white boy

400
00:19:32,432 --> 00:19:35,193
in Alexandria tonight, and
the police never even cared

401
00:19:35,217 --> 00:19:38,220
who killed Bobby Larkin
and threw him away.

402
00:19:39,830 --> 00:19:41,373
Hi, baby!

403
00:19:41,397 --> 00:19:43,138
My God.

404
00:19:45,053 --> 00:19:47,249
Hi, Grandma.

405
00:19:47,273 --> 00:19:49,405
Hi, Miss Mulu!

406
00:19:51,407 --> 00:19:53,603
Who is this crazy
doctor who attacked you?

407
00:19:53,627 --> 00:19:55,759
Ardelia told me what happened.

408
00:19:57,239 --> 00:19:59,435
I would have killed that
crazy woman myself.

409
00:19:59,459 --> 00:20:01,263
Just hit her with my good pan.

410
00:20:01,287 --> 00:20:03,395
See? She likes you better.

411
00:20:03,419 --> 00:20:05,789
Grandma, I told you, I
can't have dinner tonight.

412
00:20:05,813 --> 00:20:08,008
- I'm working a case.
- I know.

413
00:20:08,032 --> 00:20:09,793
Your first field case.

414
00:20:09,817 --> 00:20:13,449
Her first field case!

415
00:20:13,473 --> 00:20:15,364
So, you need strength.

416
00:20:15,388 --> 00:20:16,713
You need a plate.

417
00:20:16,737 --> 00:20:18,193
You won't know I'm here.

418
00:20:18,217 --> 00:20:19,498
Honestly, we're
right in the middle of...

419
00:20:19,522 --> 00:20:21,785
You need a plate.

420
00:20:38,106 --> 00:20:40,867
This really sneaks up
on you, this tudge... tej?

421
00:20:40,891 --> 00:20:42,260
It's tej.

422
00:20:42,284 --> 00:20:43,783
Tej.

423
00:20:43,807 --> 00:20:45,829
It's smoother than that
Appalachian moonshine

424
00:20:45,853 --> 00:20:47,483
you make us
everything Thanksgiving.

425
00:20:47,507 --> 00:20:50,050
Yeah. That stuff
puts me on the floor.

426
00:20:50,074 --> 00:20:53,140
Well, the only way I get
all the good info on Ardelia

427
00:20:53,164 --> 00:20:54,564
is when you're
hammered, Miss Mulu.

428
00:20:55,819 --> 00:20:57,754
Drink up.

429
00:20:57,778 --> 00:20:59,799
And here's to the FBI

430
00:20:59,823 --> 00:21:02,324
finally letting my
girl shine in the sun!

431
00:21:03,653 --> 00:21:05,699
Sprung from the
cold-case dungeon.

432
00:21:08,136 --> 00:21:10,680
See? I told you you
can rise yourself.

433
00:21:10,704 --> 00:21:12,812
You don't need
a Black Coalition.

434
00:21:12,836 --> 00:21:15,641
Later, please.

435
00:21:15,665 --> 00:21:19,123
She's talking about
organizing, going to court.

436
00:21:19,147 --> 00:21:20,690
That would just
make her a target.

437
00:21:20,714 --> 00:21:23,649
The system's rigged.

438
00:21:23,673 --> 00:21:25,695
Rise quietly

439
00:21:25,719 --> 00:21:28,741
and then make change
when you have the power.

440
00:21:28,765 --> 00:21:32,160
Otherwise, you end up
as bad off as her father.

441
00:21:37,383 --> 00:21:39,230
You go see your
father this week?

442
00:21:39,254 --> 00:21:41,319
I don't know if he
even hears me.

443
00:21:41,343 --> 00:21:42,973
He can hear you.

444
00:21:42,997 --> 00:21:46,261
He may not be able
to tell you, but he can.

445
00:21:47,915 --> 00:21:49,893
Don't give me the big pity eyes.

446
00:21:49,917 --> 00:21:51,962
At least my
father's still alive.

447
00:21:59,405 --> 00:22:02,645
Wow. You are brutal.

448
00:22:02,669 --> 00:22:04,342
A large crowd
gathered this evening

449
00:22:04,366 --> 00:22:07,345
for a candlelight vigil in
memory of Cody Phel...

450
00:22:07,369 --> 00:22:09,826
WhaDid you do the old
addresses on the Phelpses?

451
00:22:09,850 --> 00:22:13,046
I didn't... Did you know they used to
live about a block from the Larkins?

452
00:22:13,070 --> 00:22:15,745
Hey, hey... You want me to
tie your shoes for you, too?

453
00:22:15,769 --> 00:22:17,921
Look, look, I don't know what's
been going on with you lately,

454
00:22:17,945 --> 00:22:19,314
whether it's this
thing with Cody

455
00:22:19,338 --> 00:22:20,706
or whatever's happening
with Krendler, but...

456
00:22:20,730 --> 00:22:22,360
You're right, Chiquita.
You don't know.

457
00:22:22,384 --> 00:22:25,145
What happened to
Cody is, we were too late.

458
00:22:25,169 --> 00:22:27,539
But now his mother needs answers

459
00:22:27,563 --> 00:22:29,585
so she can actually sleep again.

460
00:22:29,609 --> 00:22:31,935
She needs to know
she didn't flub the one job

461
00:22:31,959 --> 00:22:34,154
- given to her as a mother.
- - to keep her kid alive.

462
00:22:34,178 --> 00:22:35,895
She's alive.

463
00:22:35,919 --> 00:22:38,289
She needs us.

464
00:22:38,313 --> 00:22:40,750
Can you wrap your
head around that, killer?

465
00:22:45,233 --> 00:22:46,819
The lab got a DNA match.

466
00:22:46,843 --> 00:22:48,279
We got a suspect.

467
00:22:52,327 --> 00:22:54,634
That woman is out like a light.

468
00:22:56,636 --> 00:22:58,831
I can totally sleep
on the couch.

469
00:22:58,855 --> 00:23:00,833
That couch?

470
00:23:00,857 --> 00:23:02,444
Please.

471
00:23:02,468 --> 00:23:04,731
Come on. Good.

472
00:23:23,271 --> 00:23:26,685
How did your dad get hurt?

473
00:23:26,709 --> 00:23:29,277
You told me someone
hit him, but you never...

474
00:23:31,322 --> 00:23:33,866
He was a labor organizer.

475
00:23:33,890 --> 00:23:35,912
Mulu says there was
a dispute at the port.

476
00:23:35,936 --> 00:23:37,304
No, I know.

477
00:23:37,328 --> 00:23:41,483
I mean... was it the police?

478
00:23:41,507 --> 00:23:44,877
The police beat him?

479
00:23:49,906 --> 00:23:52,256
I don't even remember his voice.

480
00:23:56,696 --> 00:23:58,021
When I was 4,

481
00:23:58,045 --> 00:24:03,113
I used to love
feeling his stubble.

482
00:24:03,137 --> 00:24:06,595
Now I like to visit a day or
two after they shave his face

483
00:24:06,619 --> 00:24:08,316
so I can still feel it.

484
00:24:11,319 --> 00:24:13,713
Is that weird?

485
00:24:15,715 --> 00:24:17,325
Am I weird?

486
00:24:19,327 --> 00:24:24,177
No.

487
00:24:24,201 --> 00:24:27,137
I can't believe you
never told me that before.

488
00:24:27,161 --> 00:24:28,704
You?

489
00:24:28,728 --> 00:24:30,357
Yours?

490
00:24:30,381 --> 00:24:32,340
What don't I know?

491
00:24:35,604 --> 00:24:37,737
My last memory of my dad

492
00:24:40,740 --> 00:24:43,458
was the night
before he got killed.

493
00:24:43,482 --> 00:24:46,267
Took me on his rounds.

494
00:24:50,184 --> 00:24:52,945
My mom was losing it.

495
00:24:52,969 --> 00:24:55,145
She was always on the edge.

496
00:24:57,583 --> 00:24:59,149
Always angry.

497
00:25:01,195 --> 00:25:03,956
But this night, she was scary

498
00:25:03,980 --> 00:25:07,569
and screaming at him to get out.

499
00:25:07,593 --> 00:25:11,442
My daddy just swooped me up.

500
00:25:11,466 --> 00:25:16,123
We drove all over
town all night long.

501
00:25:18,604 --> 00:25:20,562
We got Coke floats.

502
00:25:22,346 --> 00:25:25,611
It felt renegade,
against the rules.

503
00:25:28,614 --> 00:25:30,746
But he was the rules.

504
00:25:32,618 --> 00:25:34,750
He was the law.

505
00:25:36,404 --> 00:25:39,905
He seemed to have the
keys to every door in town.

506
00:25:39,929 --> 00:25:41,714
He was important.

507
00:25:49,069 --> 00:25:51,462
That was the night
he gave me this.

508
00:25:53,987 --> 00:25:56,598
Probably the best
night of my life.

509
00:26:04,171 --> 00:26:07,977
Funny how we only
keep the good memories.

510
00:26:08,001 --> 00:26:09,959
Like the photos we like.

511
00:26:12,222 --> 00:26:16,879
Yeah.

512
00:26:41,251 --> 00:26:44,317
Ooh!

513
00:26:44,341 --> 00:26:47,059
The lab got a match on
one of your DNA swabs.

514
00:26:47,083 --> 00:26:48,670
God. You were right.

515
00:26:48,694 --> 00:26:50,628
Was it Terrence? No.

516
00:26:50,652 --> 00:26:53,022
A woman... Marybeth Kern.

517
00:26:53,046 --> 00:26:56,005
Our report said she's
a friend of the family.

518
00:27:03,317 --> 00:27:05,817
Got the background
check on Marybeth Kern.

519
00:27:05,841 --> 00:27:08,385
Mulu get home okay?

520
00:27:08,409 --> 00:27:10,387
So, her first husband
was Gerry Kern,

521
00:27:10,411 --> 00:27:11,649
a construction worker.

522
00:27:11,673 --> 00:27:12,998
And they had a son, Gerry Jr.,

523
00:27:13,022 --> 00:27:14,696
less than a year
after the wedding.

524
00:27:14,720 --> 00:27:16,654
So shotgun wedding. Maybe.

525
00:27:16,678 --> 00:27:20,223
Marybeth said she lost her
husband when the son was 14.

526
00:27:20,247 --> 00:27:21,659
Died? Divorced?

527
00:27:21,683 --> 00:27:22,921
Shoes off my couch, Starling.

528
00:27:22,945 --> 00:27:24,227
Sorry.

529
00:27:24,251 --> 00:27:26,011
Um, no, he just left.

530
00:27:26,035 --> 00:27:28,623
Marybeth moved to D.C.,
but the son, Gerry Jr.?

531
00:27:28,647 --> 00:27:31,495
He just drops off
the face of the Earth.

532
00:27:31,519 --> 00:27:33,149
No sign of him after D.C.

533
00:27:33,173 --> 00:27:37,066
But Marybeth's DNA was found
on both Bobby and Cody's bodies.

534
00:27:37,090 --> 00:27:38,894
How did it get there
if she didn't kill them?

535
00:27:38,918 --> 00:27:41,984
Marybeth had no worries at
all about giving up her DNA.

536
00:27:42,008 --> 00:27:44,053
Does she want to get caught?

537
00:27:47,274 --> 00:27:49,382
It's mitochondrial DNA.

538
00:27:49,406 --> 00:27:51,428
That's passed
through the mother.

539
00:27:51,452 --> 00:27:53,082
They were mistaken IDs.

540
00:27:53,106 --> 00:27:54,997
So the DNA could be Marybeth's

541
00:27:55,021 --> 00:27:57,477
or it could be her son's.

542
00:27:57,501 --> 00:27:59,329
So where is he now?

543
00:28:03,116 --> 00:28:04,397
This is Agent Clarke.

544
00:28:04,421 --> 00:28:06,399
Leave a message.

545
00:28:06,423 --> 00:28:07,990
Clarke, answer your phone.

546
00:28:09,905 --> 00:28:12,318
Hudlin's headed into Lockyer.

547
00:28:12,342 --> 00:28:16,192
This is not it.

548
00:28:16,216 --> 00:28:18,237
Are you... Are you asleep?

549
00:28:18,261 --> 00:28:20,239
You're awake?

550
00:28:20,263 --> 00:28:22,241
Bring these back. Two
hours I waited for this.

551
00:28:22,265 --> 00:28:23,658
Two hours!

552
00:28:26,443 --> 00:28:28,334
Mobile grooming.

553
00:28:28,358 --> 00:28:30,293
Yeah, your pal here
is about to lose his job.

554
00:28:30,317 --> 00:28:31,555
What's he doing?

555
00:28:31,579 --> 00:28:32,774
Going mad with power.

556
00:28:32,798 --> 00:28:35,907
Go, go, go! I'm...
I'm surrounded.

557
00:28:35,931 --> 00:28:38,214
Look, I've put up with
his little racist digs, but I...

558
00:28:38,238 --> 00:28:40,695
- Let it go.
- I'm gonna hit him, okay?

559
00:28:40,719 --> 00:28:42,871
I'm gonna hit him really
hard, and then I lose my job.

560
00:28:42,895 --> 00:28:44,873
Hey, I'm not saying
don't punch him.

561
00:28:44,897 --> 00:28:46,831
Just not today. It's
a missing-kid case.

562
00:28:46,855 --> 00:28:49,268
I know that.

563
00:28:49,292 --> 00:28:52,489
Murray's little sister got
taken from their front yard

564
00:28:52,513 --> 00:28:54,665
when she was 13.

565
00:28:54,689 --> 00:28:56,928
Murray was 16. He
was the only one home.

566
00:28:56,952 --> 00:28:59,583
Some precinct guy
a bunch of years ago

567
00:28:59,607 --> 00:29:03,761
said that he thought he saw
her in one of those movies once.

568
00:29:03,785 --> 00:29:06,048
That's the only lead
Murray's ever had.

569
00:29:10,096 --> 00:29:12,161
So when he's looking at porn...

570
00:29:12,185 --> 00:29:14,230
He's looking for her.

571
00:29:17,233 --> 00:29:20,299
Well, um, in other news,
you're not gonna believe

572
00:29:20,323 --> 00:29:22,432
which building I just saw
Joseph Hudlin, Esquire,

573
00:29:22,456 --> 00:29:23,694
walk into.

574
00:29:23,718 --> 00:29:24,913
What?

575
00:29:24,937 --> 00:29:26,653
Lockyer Labs. Get out.

576
00:29:26,677 --> 00:29:29,613
So, Hudlin's involved with
the clinical trial somehow.

577
00:29:29,637 --> 00:29:31,354
Keep it between us for now.

578
00:29:31,378 --> 00:29:33,530
And, for Murray, look,
do what you gotta do,

579
00:29:33,554 --> 00:29:35,575
but if you tell him that I
told you about his sister,

580
00:29:35,599 --> 00:29:37,123
I'll shoot you in your sleep.

581
00:29:40,169 --> 00:29:42,539
May I ask why your husband left?

582
00:29:42,563 --> 00:29:45,760
No. No, it's okay.

583
00:29:45,784 --> 00:29:51,504
Gerry always resented
the responsibility.

584
00:29:51,528 --> 00:29:55,770
He said, we weighed him down,

585
00:29:55,794 --> 00:30:00,949
me and... our boy.

586
00:30:00,973 --> 00:30:03,062
And your son?

587
00:30:07,109 --> 00:30:08,478
Where is he now?

588
00:30:08,502 --> 00:30:10,959
I don't know where he is.

589
00:30:10,983 --> 00:30:12,941
He went with his father.

590
00:30:15,596 --> 00:30:18,401
I don't know.

591
00:30:18,425 --> 00:30:22,690
For God's sakes, babe, can
you go quiet those dogs down?

592
00:30:29,479 --> 00:30:32,110
Ma'am, may I please
use your restroom?

593
00:30:32,134 --> 00:30:34,789
Yeah. Yeah. It's
just down the hall.

594
00:30:37,096 --> 00:30:39,117
And then you moved here.

595
00:30:39,141 --> 00:30:41,230
When did you remarry?

596
00:30:43,972 --> 00:30:46,124
After that.

597
00:30:46,148 --> 00:30:48,823
So, you say you knew the
Phelps family, Cody Phelps.

598
00:30:48,847 --> 00:30:51,390
Sure. God.

599
00:30:51,414 --> 00:30:54,176
It's just tragic.

600
00:30:54,200 --> 00:30:58,789
What happened to
little Cody is just awful.

601
00:30:58,813 --> 00:31:02,271
The Phelpses...
they moved away...

602
00:31:02,295 --> 00:31:04,340
Gosh, I don't know how
many years ago now.

603
00:31:38,200 --> 00:31:41,832
So your son never
knew Cody or Bobby.

604
00:31:41,856 --> 00:31:44,617
My son? Yeah.

605
00:31:44,641 --> 00:31:47,185
Um, no. I...

606
00:31:47,209 --> 00:31:51,407
Just you and your
husband here, Mrs. Kern?

607
00:31:51,431 --> 00:31:53,191
Just me and him, yep.

608
00:31:53,215 --> 00:31:55,565
Do you have any pictures of
your son that we could have?

609
00:31:58,438 --> 00:32:00,416
No.

610
00:32:00,440 --> 00:32:02,853
I... He went with his
daddy. I don't have...

611
00:32:02,877 --> 00:32:04,507
Even a childhood picture?

612
00:32:04,531 --> 00:32:06,465
We have folks who can...

613
00:32:06,489 --> 00:32:09,425
No. I-I don't think so.

614
00:32:09,449 --> 00:32:11,427
I'm sorry.

615
00:32:11,451 --> 00:32:14,517
What does all of this
have to do with my son?

616
00:32:14,541 --> 00:32:16,258
Mrs. Kern, remember
when I took your DNA sample

617
00:32:16,282 --> 00:32:17,781
back at the Larkins'?

618
00:32:17,805 --> 00:32:21,654
It matched DNA found at
Cody's body and Bobby's.

619
00:32:21,678 --> 00:32:23,091
Mi-Mine?

620
00:32:23,115 --> 00:32:25,421
It's possible it could
also be your son's.

621
00:32:27,902 --> 00:32:30,185
You see, ma'am,
mitochondrial DNA is the same

622
00:32:30,209 --> 00:32:32,472
from mother to child.

623
00:32:42,525 --> 00:32:45,113
I killed them.

624
00:32:45,137 --> 00:32:47,226
I killed those boys.

625
00:32:49,141 --> 00:32:51,467
I'm sorry.

626
00:32:51,491 --> 00:32:53,449
I'm so sorry.

627
00:32:55,451 --> 00:32:57,647
No, Marybeth, you didn't.

628
00:32:57,671 --> 00:32:59,910
Who are you covering for?

629
00:32:59,934 --> 00:33:01,762
Marybeth, where is your son?

630
00:33:08,856 --> 00:33:11,791
Mrs. Kern, one more
time. Where's your son?

631
00:33:11,815 --> 00:33:13,165
Where's Gerry?

632
00:33:15,906 --> 00:33:17,536
Gerry!

633
00:33:17,560 --> 00:33:19,147
Gerry, baby! Gerry!

634
00:33:19,171 --> 00:33:21,410
Ger...

635
00:33:21,434 --> 00:33:23,412
Is he in the garage?

636
00:33:23,436 --> 00:33:25,612
I don't know what
he does out there.

637
00:33:37,754 --> 00:33:39,669
Mr. Kern?

638
00:33:51,333 --> 00:33:53,074
Mr. Kern?

639
00:33:56,338 --> 00:33:58,253
Tell me where you are, Gerry.

640
00:34:07,088 --> 00:34:09,719
- You leave us alone!
- Who, Gerry?

641
00:34:09,743 --> 00:34:11,938
Your new wife or
you and your mother?

642
00:34:11,962 --> 00:34:14,680
Shut up! She doesn't know!

643
00:34:14,704 --> 00:34:16,117
What happened, Gerry?

644
00:34:16,141 --> 00:34:20,556
Did Bobby find out
about you and your mom?

645
00:34:20,580 --> 00:34:23,776
She told me not to tell anyone.

646
00:34:23,800 --> 00:34:26,866
I had to tell someone.

647
00:34:26,890 --> 00:34:28,999
They were just boys,
Gerry. Why tell them?

648
00:34:29,023 --> 00:34:32,611
Because they were
just boys without fathers.

649
00:34:32,635 --> 00:34:36,050
I... You're worried for them?

650
00:34:36,074 --> 00:34:37,921
You didn't want them
to have to do the things

651
00:34:37,945 --> 00:34:39,816
your mother made you do.

652
00:34:42,993 --> 00:34:45,189
She told me that I
drove her husband away

653
00:34:45,213 --> 00:34:47,955
and that she needed
a husband, so...

654
00:34:50,566 --> 00:34:53,719
Someone needed to...

655
00:34:53,743 --> 00:34:56,679
Someone needed to stop us!

656
00:34:56,703 --> 00:34:58,942
You needed to stop us!

657
00:34:58,966 --> 00:35:01,316
And there was
nobody there to stop us!

658
00:35:20,814 --> 00:35:23,749
I was 14.

659
00:35:23,773 --> 00:35:26,883
When a child is sexually abused,

660
00:35:26,907 --> 00:35:28,735
a whole part of them dies.

661
00:35:32,565 --> 00:35:34,958
And the kid tries to
survive in there somewhere.

662
00:35:37,091 --> 00:35:39,330
When Gerry Jr.'s
father left them...

663
00:35:39,354 --> 00:35:41,202
My husband left me.

664
00:35:41,226 --> 00:35:44,814
His mother only had
her grief and her anger

665
00:35:44,838 --> 00:35:47,686
I wasn't a wife
and... and her son.

666
00:35:47,710 --> 00:35:50,385
And Gerry Jr., he was
always my little boy.

667
00:35:50,409 --> 00:35:51,734
He was always my little man.

668
00:35:51,758 --> 00:35:55,738
She'll say she was so lonely,

669
00:35:55,762 --> 00:35:59,307
that she needed to
hurt the man who left.

670
00:35:59,331 --> 00:36:02,962
She hated the father more
than she loved her son.

671
00:36:02,986 --> 00:36:05,356
I was 14 years old.

672
00:36:05,380 --> 00:36:07,576
And the child will try to
make anything normal.

673
00:36:07,600 --> 00:36:11,971
And my mom kissed me
like I was her husband.

674
00:36:11,995 --> 00:36:16,237
And a child needs friends.

675
00:36:16,261 --> 00:36:18,413
Gerry Jr. made friends
with neighborhood boys.

676
00:36:18,437 --> 00:36:20,806
I'm so sorry.

677
00:36:20,830 --> 00:36:23,374
With Bobby Larkin
u found my baby.

678
00:36:23,398 --> 00:36:26,595
- And Cody Phelps.
- Thank you.

679
00:36:26,619 --> 00:36:30,076
There was no one there for me.

680
00:36:30,100 --> 00:36:33,036
He told them his secret.

681
00:36:33,060 --> 00:36:35,236
And then he panicked.

682
00:36:40,415 --> 00:36:42,591
He made them keep it.

683
00:36:45,594 --> 00:36:47,529
Good Lord.

684
00:36:47,553 --> 00:36:49,052
What parents
can do to their kids

685
00:36:49,076 --> 00:36:51,774
and still not believe
they're doing it.

686
00:36:53,123 --> 00:36:54,753
Outstanding work.

687
00:36:54,777 --> 00:36:56,407
I just got off the
phone with the AG.

688
00:36:56,431 --> 00:36:57,800
She couldn't be happier.

689
00:36:57,824 --> 00:37:00,890
She said, "More like this."

690
00:37:00,914 --> 00:37:03,066
Wants press.

691
00:37:03,090 --> 00:37:06,548
I found the case, sir,
that led us to the killer.

692
00:37:06,572 --> 00:37:09,812
If it weren't for my work,
neither case would be solved.

693
00:37:09,836 --> 00:37:12,902
I'd like my superiors
and the AG to know that.

694
00:37:12,926 --> 00:37:14,686
I'll see to it.

695
00:37:14,710 --> 00:37:16,645
Well done, Mapp.

696
00:37:16,669 --> 00:37:18,540
Well done.

697
00:37:21,413 --> 00:37:22,718
Krendler.

698
00:37:25,243 --> 00:37:26,655
Paul.

699
00:37:26,679 --> 00:37:28,309
Joe Hudlin here.

700
00:37:28,333 --> 00:37:29,986
Hang on.

701
00:37:37,690 --> 00:37:40,234
That felt real, right?

702
00:37:40,258 --> 00:37:42,061
Right?

703
00:37:42,085 --> 00:37:44,455
I just wanted to make sure we,

704
00:37:44,479 --> 00:37:46,327
didn't have a misunderstanding.

705
00:37:46,351 --> 00:37:48,222
No, I-I think I understood you.

706
00:37:50,050 --> 00:37:52,463
I just don't think this is
the direction I want to go.

707
00:37:54,141 --> 00:37:57,512
I'm not sure you
did understand me.

708
00:37:57,536 --> 00:37:59,688
It's very intimate.

709
00:37:59,712 --> 00:38:01,864
I have a lot of information
about your wife,

710
00:38:01,888 --> 00:38:05,302
your family, their schedules,
the comings and goings.

711
00:38:05,326 --> 00:38:08,000
I can get you your kids, but,

712
00:38:08,024 --> 00:38:11,177
I need something
from you, though.

713
00:38:11,201 --> 00:38:13,029
What's that?

714
00:38:14,814 --> 00:38:18,402
Pull your team off what went
down on the Anacostia River,

715
00:38:18,426 --> 00:38:20,123
the three dead women.

716
00:38:22,256 --> 00:38:24,452
I think you got the wrong man.

717
00:38:24,476 --> 00:38:26,802
Somebody falsified
a coroner's report

718
00:38:26,826 --> 00:38:30,762
in order to cover up the murder
of a suspect in your custody.

719
00:38:30,786 --> 00:38:33,243
No one is aware
this has happened,

720
00:38:33,267 --> 00:38:35,985
but if somebody's
told to look into it,

721
00:38:36,009 --> 00:38:40,056
they'll find it really
looks like it was you.

722
00:38:41,493 --> 00:38:43,862
You'll never get your
kids after that kind of thing

723
00:38:43,886 --> 00:38:46,019
and you'll never
get them from prison.

724
00:38:48,021 --> 00:38:50,608
I've got the right man, Paul.

725
00:38:50,632 --> 00:38:53,655
That's why I found you.

726
00:38:53,679 --> 00:38:57,136
I'm very, very serious
about getting you custody.

727
00:38:57,160 --> 00:38:59,728
Talk soon.

728
00:39:23,839 --> 00:39:25,121
Please don't stop.

729
00:39:25,145 --> 00:39:26,862
Shut up.

730
00:39:26,886 --> 00:39:28,757
You didn't see that.

731
00:39:30,716 --> 00:39:33,172
Ready for the meeting?

732
00:39:33,196 --> 00:39:34,589
Tonight.

733
00:39:36,678 --> 00:39:38,221
What's wrong?

734
00:39:38,245 --> 00:39:41,137
I think I need to pull
back from the Coalition.

735
00:39:41,161 --> 00:39:43,400
I need to stick to
my original plan...

736
00:39:43,424 --> 00:39:44,706
Make change from within.

737
00:39:44,730 --> 00:39:46,621
Who said that
was the right path?

738
00:39:46,645 --> 00:39:48,187
Clarice Starling?

739
00:39:48,211 --> 00:39:51,495
My father.

740
00:39:51,519 --> 00:39:55,238
Well

741
00:39:55,262 --> 00:39:57,046
tell him I disagree.

742
00:40:19,939 --> 00:40:21,984
Starling, is this your guy?

743
00:40:23,856 --> 00:40:25,573
You gotta be kidding me.

744
00:40:25,597 --> 00:40:28,358
We couldn't snag DNA, but he
had a meeting at Lockyer Labs.

745
00:40:28,382 --> 00:40:31,448
So he might be tied
to the clinical trials.

746
00:40:31,472 --> 00:40:34,146
Starling.

747
00:40:34,170 --> 00:40:36,105
I looked into Joe Hudlin.

748
00:40:36,129 --> 00:40:39,151
I met with him and
did due diligence.

749
00:40:39,175 --> 00:40:40,979
He's not your guy.

750
00:40:41,003 --> 00:40:43,721
But, sir, he was t-there when...

751
00:40:43,745 --> 00:40:46,289
- Boss, I saw him -walk into Lockyer.
- Circumstantial.

752
00:40:46,313 --> 00:40:48,117
U.S. Attorney told
us it won't hold up.

753
00:40:48,141 --> 00:40:49,640
We're backing off
the conspiracy thing.

754
00:40:49,664 --> 00:40:51,120
We're backing off?

755
00:40:51,144 --> 00:40:52,426
The River Murders...

756
00:40:52,450 --> 00:40:54,079
The River Murders are solved.

757
00:40:54,103 --> 00:40:56,430
They're in the books.
Wellig and Felker.

758
00:40:56,454 --> 00:40:59,084
The conspiracy is
not ViCAP's mandate.

759
00:40:59,108 --> 00:41:02,087
Finding Cody's
killer was a huge win.

760
00:41:02,111 --> 00:41:03,741
Let's do what we do, guys.

761
00:41:03,765 --> 00:41:05,787
Sir, Joe Hudlin was there
when I was almost killed.

762
00:41:05,811 --> 00:41:07,136
But no one can confirm that.

763
00:41:07,160 --> 00:41:09,118
I can confirm that!

764
00:41:14,167 --> 00:41:16,058
You came back early.

765
00:41:16,082 --> 00:41:17,929
You need more time off,

766
00:41:17,953 --> 00:41:20,584
I'll write it up,
whatever you need.

767
00:41:20,608 --> 00:41:24,786
Hey, you can stay and
find another Gerry Kern.

768
00:41:27,485 --> 00:41:30,768
Good work today.

769
00:41:30,792 --> 00:41:32,751
Everyone.
