Storyline: Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.: Season 1 (Australia)
Set in modern-day Hawai‘i, “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” – a coming-of-age dramedy inspired by the hit medical series “Doogie Howser, M.D.” – follows Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, a 16-year-old prodigy juggling a budding medical career and life as a teenager.
With the support of her caring and comical ‘ohana (family) and friends, Lahela is determined to make the most of her teenage years and forge her own path. Season 1, Episode 1 – “Aloha-The Hello One”
For prodigy Dr. Lahela “Doogie” Kamealoha, juggling a budding medical career with the daily challenges of teenage life is never easy.
She’s excited to celebrate her 16th birthday and experience some of life’s firsts, such as passing her driver’s license test and attending a high school dance (with a cute surfer named Walter!). However, her responsibilities at the hospital and her loving but overprotective parents, Benny and Clara, are bound to disrupt her plans.

Lahela tackles two mysteries: the root cause of a tourist’s sudden paralysis and Walter’s feelings.

Lahela wonders if it’s time to define her relationship with Walter. That thought is suddenly sidelined when Walter is rushed to the hospital for an appendectomy – that falls on Lahela to perform.
After Clara’s work conflicts with yet another family milestone, she decides to go part-time, much to everyone’s surprise. However, a big announcement at the hospital may change her mind. Both Lahela and her mom confront the challenges of being strong, smart women in today’s world.
Season 1, Episode 5 – “Dunk Cost”
Clara is determined to lock down the Chief of Staff position. While she tries to win over the outgoing Chief of Staff, Dr. Choi, Benny learns that Lahela is pursuing a new passion.
She’s intrigued with DripFlip, a website sneakerheads use to buy and sell limited-edition shoes for profit. He jumps at the chance to enjoy quality time with his daughter and impart wisdom from his stock-trading days. When Lahela takes it too far, Benny shares a lesson about balance and what’s most important in life.
Season 1, Episode 6 – “Career Babes”
Lahela struggles to figure out where she fits in; she’s not a normal doctor or a typical teen. She’s too young to attend Dr. Lee’s party with her medical colleagues, yet she’s hosting an alumni booth for career day at her former high school. When Lahela decides to join the popular dance team at the high school, tension builds with Steph. At the hospital, Lahela tries to reconnect two estranged sisters for a kidney transplant, and finally realizes where she’s fit in all along.
Season 1, Episode 7 – “Mom-Mentum”
Lahela and Clara work in sync and share a vision for their medical careers. That abruptly changes when Dr. Arthur Goldstein, a Seattle surgeon on the cutting edge of medical technology, visits the hospital. Benny is gearing up for his favorite surf competition only to discover that he’s been placed in the seniors division. While Lahela contemplates a fellowship to study alongside Dr. Goldstein, Benny considers surfing 12-foot swells with Walter and his buddies to show he’s still got it.
Season 1, Episode 8 – “Talk-Story”
Lahela is touched by the love between an elderly patient and his new bride, and can envision a future with Walter. But Noelani forces Lahela to question the long-term viability of a teen doctor and a surfer/skater, encouraging her to accept an invitation to a poetry reading from a young college-bound hospital volunteer. When all-business Clara learns she has to schmooze with colleagues to win the Chief of Staff job, Benny encourages her to show them her fun side by teaching her to “talk story.”
Season 1, Episode 9 – “Scutwork”
Lahela learns that she and Walter will be long-distance for the summer when he’s invited to join an Australian surf tour. She orders an expensive cake to make his 17th birthday memorable but nearly misses the party when Dr. Lee insists she transcribe his voice memos. That task becomes a lifesaver when Lahela recognizes Uncle John’s rare symptom and rushes him to the hospital. With this sudden reminder that time is precious, Lahela considers a summer medic position with Walter’s surf tour.
Season 1, Episode 10 – “Aloha – The Goodbye One ”
Lahela accepts a medic job on Walter’s pro surf tour in Australia but Benny and Clara refuse to let their 16-year-old live with her boyfriend and leave her medical residency for the summer. As the Chief of Staff announcement nears, Lahela circumvents Clara’s authority, requesting a sabbatical, and Benny insists Uncle John should be discharged early for the family’s King Kamehameha Day potluck. Walter offers to skip his tour and Lahela musters the strength to do what’s right, even if it’s hard.
